America Reads

America Reads is a tutoring program with the goal of placing trained literacy tutors in public schools where they can provide children with one-on-one assistance in reading and writing.  The America Reads program was designed to help ensure that every American child can read well and independently by the end of third grade.  America Reads sparks collaborations between educators, parents, librarians, business people, senior citizens, college students, and community and religious groups. The America Reads website is located at http://www.ed.gov/inits/americareads/.

This is a page I have created to display my experiences in the America Reads Program at Danville Elementary in Danville, Pennsylvania.  I was introduced to the America Reads Program through Dr. Starkey an education professor at Bloomsburg University in 2002.  In this program, I created individual lessons, that met the academic standards, for students that were assigned to me.  These lessons were Language Arts based and included stories with writing activities.  I also worked with students on word recognition, word banks, and tested them in the beginning and end of the program to record improvement.  I was responsible for meeting with my students twice a week and teaching them lessons that were challenging, yet beneficial.  Each day I reflected on how my lessons went with the students, and from this I created the next lesson.

This was a very beneficial and valuable experience for me as I met children reading at an "A" level and left them reading at an "H" or "I" level.  It is unimaginable the joy and satisfaction of a child improving in their reading abilities until you have experienced it and America Reads has given me that opportunity.  Below are a few picture of my worthwhile experience as an America Reads participant.

These are a few pictures of my doing my lesson with my students:
